Hidden Valley Program…such great kids!

Our D5 team had such a great time teaching the kids at Hidden Valley School in Santa Rosa to make Gingerbread Pancakes with warm fruit along with a nice cup of spiced cider. As always we weave in points from the five directions- they learned about food miles and eating locally, various types of ‘milk,’ and even how much sleep they need a night!

We’re looking forward to seeing many-if not all!- of these kids in January when we begin the next series of after school classes.

Hidden Valley School in Santa Rosa

We are so excited about a full class at Hidden Valley School this coming Wednesday, December 7th! We’re teaching the kids to make Gingerbread Pancakes with warm sauteed apples and cranberries and warm spiced apple cider.

We’ll use organic ingredients, unrefined sugar, and whole-wheat pastry flour. The recipe notes how to make changes if they are vegetarian and vegan, or can not have gluten or wheat. They will also not endlessly pour some junky pancake syrup on their pancakes! We’ll stop them with our warm fruit with a little real maple syrup.

We all know that pancakes are not a healthy breakfast, but kids do love them-as do most people-so they will learn how to make them a little healthier. They’ll also learn some nutrition basics as they stir batter and slice apples!

See you then!

Gala Photos

Time to get back to ‘normal!’ Our very first Gala was a success, we are very proud to say! It was elegant, fun,  with a great vibe in the room.

Thank you everyone who attended, purchased a ticket even if you couldn’t attend, or assisted in some way.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here you go!

By the way, cross September 22, 2012 off your calendars. It’s our next Gala! Details after we’ve recuperated from this one…

Congesswoman Lynn Woolsey

We were more than pleased to receive a call from Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey asking for a meeting to update her on DirectionFive.

The Congresswoman has always been involved with kids and their health and she and I shared a nice memory of her coming to my cooking school and as she put it, “smelling that wonderful smell of greens cooking.” How nice….

You’ll be hearing more about her support as time goes on, but for now, our smiling faces say it all!

From the left, Tanya, Susan, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, and yours truly.

Can Health Education be fun? Yes, if it’s done in the kitchen!

SANTA ROSA, CA –September 6, 2011 –  DirectionFive announced today the collaboration with Chop’s Teen Club to host a new and revolutionary Culinary and Health Program for teens ages 12-18.  The series of classes will take place at Chop’s Teen Club in Santa Rosa.

A free kick-off introductory event will take place on Saturday, September 17th from 2:00-3:00 p.m.  Classes run October through December and are open to teens ages 12-18.  All classes will be held at Chop’s Teen Club.

During the classes kids learn about the basic foundations of health including the eleven body systems, the body/mind connection, the body/earth connection and the effects of physical fitness. This learning becomes engrained as kids prepare delicious recipes and learn kitchen basics. They have fun while they learn, which is the key component!

Patty James, Founder and Director of DirectionFive, a non-profit organization, will teach the classes.  Patty is a Certified Natural Chef with a Master’s Degree in Holistic Nutrition.  Patty founded and directed the Patty James Cooking School – the first certified organic cooking school and nutrition center in the country!  She is also the co-author of the popular healthy eating book, “More Vegetables, Please”.

“I traveled the country talking to kids from all walks of life.  I listened to what they said they wanted and needed to learn, in order to lead happier, healthier lives.” said Patty James, “I’m excited that the DirectionFive program, a new model for health education inspired by kids, is now available for teens at Chop’s Teen Club.”

Chop’s Teen Club is Santa Rosa’s premier multi-use recreation and enrichment facility designed for teens.  Located in historic Railroad Square, Chop’s state of the art building houses a teaching kitchen where the classes will be held.

“We are thrilled to host the DirectionFive program,” said Chop’s Teen Club’s Executive Director Diana Curtin.  “We are currently revitalizing our own direction on health and fitness here at Chop’s, and we see this program as an avenue towards that goal.”

To sign up for the free Saturday, September 17th event, or to register for the classes, call Chop’s Teen Club at 284-2467, or register in person at Chop’s, 509 Adams Street in Santa Rosa.
