Can Health Education be fun? Yes, if it’s done in the kitchen!

SANTA ROSA, CA –September 6, 2011 –  DirectionFive announced today the collaboration with Chop’s Teen Club to host a new and revolutionary Culinary and Health Program for teens ages 12-18.  The series of classes will take place at Chop’s Teen Club in Santa Rosa.

A free kick-off introductory event will take place on Saturday, September 17th from 2:00-3:00 p.m.  Classes run October through December and are open to teens ages 12-18.  All classes will be held at Chop’s Teen Club.

During the classes kids learn about the basic foundations of health including the eleven body systems, the body/mind connection, the body/earth connection and the effects of physical fitness. This learning becomes engrained as kids prepare delicious recipes and learn kitchen basics. They have fun while they learn, which is the key component!

Patty James, Founder and Director of DirectionFive, a non-profit organization, will teach the classes.  Patty is a Certified Natural Chef with a Master’s Degree in Holistic Nutrition.  Patty founded and directed the Patty James Cooking School – the first certified organic cooking school and nutrition center in the country!  She is also the co-author of the popular healthy eating book, “More Vegetables, Please”.

“I traveled the country talking to kids from all walks of life.  I listened to what they said they wanted and needed to learn, in order to lead happier, healthier lives.” said Patty James, “I’m excited that the DirectionFive program, a new model for health education inspired by kids, is now available for teens at Chop’s Teen Club.”

Chop’s Teen Club is Santa Rosa’s premier multi-use recreation and enrichment facility designed for teens.  Located in historic Railroad Square, Chop’s state of the art building houses a teaching kitchen where the classes will be held.

“We are thrilled to host the DirectionFive program,” said Chop’s Teen Club’s Executive Director Diana Curtin.  “We are currently revitalizing our own direction on health and fitness here at Chop’s, and we see this program as an avenue towards that goal.”

To sign up for the free Saturday, September 17th event, or to register for the classes, call Chop’s Teen Club at 284-2467, or register in person at Chop’s, 509 Adams Street in Santa Rosa.
